Let's bring "Special When Lit" to Portland!

Postby inthecan on Mon Oct 04, 2010 11:08 pm

I just had an idea and thought I'd throw it out there to see if anyone else here might be interested in helping to bring this film to Portland http://www.specialwhenlitmovie.com/index.html
I think it It might be really fun to combine a screening of this film with a tournament of some sort. I have a good connect with the folks at Film Action Oregon who run the Hollywood Theater here in Portland, a big plus here also being that their new executive director Doug Whyte is pretty huge on documentaries so I think it could be an easy sell to get them interested in hosting it. I wouldn't be surprised if it could be arranged to bring some machines into their lobby for the evening if it all came together - anyone else have any bright ideas about how this could possibly come together? Possible sponsors, etc.

Hit me up. :D

Sounds fun! I'm not sure how much help I could be, but I definitely support the idea. I've seen the movie and it's actually really good. The simple thing to do would be to have a high score tournament or something that wouldn't require direct monitoring. Then have a playoff between the "X" number of high score players at a certain time. Or something like that? Could always do the usual double elimination format, but then you'd need 4 machines and a good 3-4 hours to run it.

The only problem I could see is that I don't recall a whole lot of space at hollywood to set up machines.

Just getting the movie to screen there would be awesome on it's own.

Yeah, I think that just getting the movie would be totally cool! Running a tournament might get complicated. I would say that if it happens you could try and organize some sort of NE pincrawl prior to the screening. That would be sweet.

Cool, I have no experience in running or even competing in tourneys so I appreciate the feedback on how we could approach that aspect here - thanks for the thoughts! BTW I'd be more than happy to leave the organizing of a featured sidebar event to CFF or other folks in PDX that would like to step up and hold it down. A cool thing about a sidebar event is that I think it would engage more casual film goers who would come out to see the flick. Please feel free to contact me directly at karl@inthecanllc.com, while I don't have the tournament thing on lock I thankfully do have a bit of experience in regards to putting film screenings on. I could see this potential screening happening a few months down the road. For now I will go ahead and do my best to get in touch with the filmmakers and see what their deal is and propose this screening to them, I can imagine that they would be very stoked to have a (hopefully) very engaged community welcome them to town! Fingers crossed.

Another idea I have had (I could could get overly ambitious here) is to help to put together a PDX Pinball art event of some sort, one idea would be to find a PDX art gallery to set up several machines in for month at a crack and feature a Pinball related art show, perhaps we could get some well known artists involved somehow.
