GoodFoot Tournament

Posted: June 29th, 2009 by dropshot

Great turnout last week so let’s keep it up! This Thursday (7/2) at 7:00 pm down at the Goodfoot. I do believe the current line-up is NBA Fastbreak, Johnny Mnemonic, Indianapolis 500, and Star Wars. Hopefully the center shot on NBA is working and you can hit the ramp on SW…I have this funny feeling inside of me that thinks you can. $5 to enter single game head to head double elimination. I’ve got 3 days to figure out a method to limit repeat games….I’ll have it by then!

Edit by ROM!

Hey dudes, some pictures from the C-Bar tournament:

bounceback’s mind is troubled by bad bounces and unresponsive slingshots. But damnit, he needs this win. Replay’s like, “what’s up guys?”

louie, you’re drunk again, the caption from ROM says “some pictures from the C-Bar tournament.”

aaron if you have time to talk to mike or call quality early in the day, please ask them to address these issues:

on fast break the flippers are aligned too low. this throws off the geometry of the shots (it’s as hard as ever to hit the center shot, but if you do get it just right it will go, unlike before,) and makes ball control very difficult, changes angles of all the shots, blah blah. the backglass ball keeps getting stuck during the pizza shot mode. the right ramp for some reason is acting as a catapult and launching the ball back into the plunger lane frequently, where you don’t get it back until the game does a ball search. really the flipper alignment is the biggest issue, and i’ve noticed it on several QE games lately even though it’s a simple adjustment.

on johnny mnemonic, the bonus X rollover lights aren’t working properly. the left one doesn’t light at all, the blinking light is difficult to see on the right light, and when 2 are lit, it frequently won’t display both lights as lit. this is a major drag on a game where bonus is such a huge part of your score.

starwars plays smooth (floats, but i’m getting the impression that’s how they all are, and you can work the ramp,) and i didn’t play indy5.

do the quality techs do standard switch and lamp tests when they look at games? lights on MM at billy ray’s have been weird for a while, the safe on sopranos still has issues registering, the destroy the ring still won’t work on the LOTR at green dragon, that left monster bash flipper is misaligned, lots of lingering issues that don’t seem like a ton of work to fix, though i don’t know much about pinball techery.

I was out all day and now the event is over but to address one comment, I don’t think to many techs care about lights and shit that often, as long as the flippers work and the machine takes quarters they seem happy. Mike does a great job, every week it is at a Quality run bar HE emails me to let me know he will/he will send someone out there to take a look at anything major.

congrats to eric and aaron for taking me out on two consecutive games of indy. that game was playing great and in competition i was under pressure, had some bad luck, and ultimately couldn’t stay composed. hope one of you went on to win it. i’m really into the way competition has improved in portland. given that you two were right there with me almost qualifying for the finals at the seattle show, i don’t feel too bad about losing– i just wish i would’ve given you a better run for your money instead of fumbling on ball 3.

w/r/t tech stuff– i totally agree that quality is the best, and i really really appreciate mike getting in touch about getting things serviced– that said, it feels weird to me that you get an email or we get a post on the board about how someone is going to come to the tourney location and dial things in, and then when we get there the minor things aren’t dealt with. there really were no major issues, nor should there be since two of those games just went in. frankly very few QE games have “major issues,” which i really am glad about.

IMO the minor stuff that’s easy to deal with should be dealt with regularly– replacing lamps, calibrating flippers, cleaning the playfield. that’s routine maintenance. i know these games get played to shit and there’s a reality to the world of being an operator. this is the dynamic. it’s like the antelope and the lion. lion’s gotta eat, antelope needs to stay alive. operator can only do so much, player’s gotta keep asking for the things that make his playing experience better. i’m not deluding myself about what will happen, but hey. it’s worth a shot to point the problems out.

I agree but if you are paying a tech $15-20 bucks an hour including drive time and even if you are only spending $5-10 on a few minor parts to fix all minor minor problems on 4 machines in one spot may take 2 hours or so plus driving. So there goes $40-50 bucks. Granted the machines probably made close to that last night but they usually don’t so there goes all the profit if they are completely kept up all the time. It would be nice but I guess I can see their side too. Either way great turnout again.

your speculation is useless and doesn’t address the points that i made. i think we both understand what the other person is saying. my problem is that you don’t seem to understand your role. you’re supposed to be doing the complaining! if you were the operator, then all your excuses about costs and whatnot would make sense, and i’d be like “uh-huh, well thanks anyway and i really appreciate you taking care of all these sweet machines i love to play” and you’d be like “super, we do the best we can and we appreciate your quarters” and we’d both shake hands and kiss on the mouth.

i say, if you’re paying a tech $15-20 an hour including drive time and all he’s doing is collecting quarters, having a beer every three stops on the route, and getting stuck in traffic, no one is getting their money’s worth, players or employers. changing a couple of lamps and aligning flippers takes about the same time as the dude taking a piss or getting stuck at a stoplight, says i, and saves costs in the future.

i know that if you’re creative enough to come up with all kinds of reasons that those problems shouldn’t be fixed, you could just as easily be thinking of ways to get them fixed, maybe faster, easier and cheaper than they’re already being done. maybe you could come up with a solution that the techs haven’t thought of, and makes all even more extra happy!

when you do that i will say “come here you big man and tickle me with that shop broom you’re storing in the closet under your nose” and we will live happily ever after. also you’re welcome for me losing like a wee bitch thursday.
